Report language and number formatting

Control in which language your reports are generated and the number formatting (what character is used as decimal and thousands separator)

Written by Jack

You can change the language and number formatting of the tax reports you generate in Koinly to suit your needs.

View and modify your current settings by going to Settings → Formatting:

🔡 Report language

Change the language in which your report is generated. You can choose any of the below languages:

  • English

  • German

  • French

  • Spanish

  • Italian

  • Russian

🔢 Number formatting

Number formatting decides how amounts appear in your reports. Mainly you can decide on:

  • Decimal separator (e.g. 112.31 or 112,31)

  • Thousands separator (e.g. 1 112.01 or 1,112.01 or 1.112.31,01)

  • Native currency symbol (e.g. Eurozone locales will use instead of EUR)

Common issues

Everything is added in one column

If all the data is added to the first column when you open the file, it means that the cell delimiter used in the file doesn't match your local settings.

To fix this:

Excel (Windows)

  • Don't double-click on the file to open it in Excel

  • Instead, launch Excel and go to File → Open

  • When you open a CSV using the open file dialog, you should be able to select the delimiter used in the file. Select a comma

Excel (Windows and MacOS)

  • Open the file in any way (you can double-click to open it)

  • Select the first column A

  • Go to Data → Text to Columns

  • Follow the wizard, selecting the character that is used as delimiter in the file

Google Sheets

You could also use Text to Columns or:

  • Create a new empty google sheet

  • Go to File → Settings

  • Change the locale.
It's hard to say what's the correct one, but usually one these will work: either United States, United Kingdom, or Germany

  • After that, go to File > Import

  • Upload your CSV file

  • In the next popup, in "Import location" select "Replace current sheet"

  • Click "Import file"

  • If the numbers are still scrambled then the locale selected is wrong

CSV reports are scrambled

If you open a Koinly CSV report in Excel (or Google Sheets) and the data looks wrong, for example:

  1. Some numbers are aligned to left some to right

  2. Some dates are aligned to left some to right

  3. Numbers are a magnitude larger (e.g. 19559 instead of 195,59)

  4. Numbers are recognized as IP addresses instead of amounts (e.g. 109.133.333.333 instead of 109 133 333,333)

All the above-mentioned issues indicate that the locale used by Koinly to generate the report doesn't match the locale in your operating system (or Excel). To fix this, you can either:

  1. Change Number Formatting in your Settings to match your OS and generate a new report

  2. OR Change locale formatting in your OS to match the formatting in the file
